The Corning Studio announces 2023 residencies including collaborative, BIPOC, and research opportunities

The Studio at The Corning Museum of Glass has announced its roster of artists in residence for 2023. Comprising the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Residency, the Instructor Collaborative Residency, and nine more residencies, the museum has awarded 16 artists from around the world the opportunity to work out of the Corning studio for one month. Residency slots are spread throughout the year, ensuring that The Studio will always have at least one artist in residence at any given time.

Montreal's Verre Art Glass was the very first iteration of the Elena Lee Galerie, and it opened in 1976.

Pioneering art dealer Elena Lee looks back on four decades of the Canadian Studio Glass scene

When we think about the first galleries devoted exclusively to glass art, names such as Heller, Traver, and Habatat, spring to mind, as the pioneering dealers who helped the field develop a commercial base. Few know of a parallel story that was unfolding simultaneously just north of the border, where a bold gallery owner hoisted a Canadian flag for glass art in 1976. When European-born Elena Lee opened the doors of her first gallery, Verre Art Glass, in Montreal, Canada, she had been inspired by her travels and what she found during a visit to Erwin Eisch's studio in Frauenau. Her husband, Stuart, was originally from Quebec, and she had a young son, and so they all relocated to Montreal, where she launched a career that would stretch for more than 40 years.

Judith Schaechter at Claire Oliver Gallery for her 8th exhibition, entitled "MAKE/BELIEVE"

Judith Schaechter’s "MAKE/BELIEVE" is currently on view at Claire Oliver Gallery in Harlem. Presented in lightboxes, six new stained glass paintings will remain on display through December 17th, 2022. Drawing on the past few years, the exhibition reflects Schaechter’s experiences through the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement. Using centuries-old techniques combined with innovative engraving and layering processes that she developed herself, Schaechter narrates stories of social upheaval and change. Along with the stained glass pieces, she also designed a custom wallpaper that will be put up in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition.

The Corning Museum of Glass is hosting it’s fourth annual Imagination to Creation: Oiva’s Birds demonstration and celebration this October. Featuring fourth-generation glassmakers from Finland’s historic Iitalla glassworks, brothers Pete and Juha Saariko will be demonstrating the late Oiva Toikka’s bird-making techniques at Corning’s Amphitheater Hot Shop from October 12-15.

EXHIBITION: The Toledo Museum of Art features a rare 19th-century glass dress as a highlight from its vaults

Despite it's fragility, the beauty of glass has proved an irresistible allure for the fashion world since ancient times, and the material today can be found in everything from accessories to complete ensembles. One need look no further than the Glass Art Society Fashion Show to see how contemporary artists ingeniously incorporate glass into wearable sculptures that are a showstopper at the artist conference. Evidence of the enduring appeal of mixing glass and fashion is currently on view at the Toledo Museum of Art is presenting its very own glass dress, a Libbey creation from the 1893 World’s Fair with a rich history and perhaps an uncertain future.

WheatonArts is accepting applications for its 2023 Creative Glass Fellowship, seeking exceptional artists to live and work at the Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center, for 3-week and 6-week sessions in the Spring and the Fall. Offering a stipend, on-campus housing, access to Wheaton’s world renowned studio spaces, and institutional support, the fellowship is a robust opportunity to explore and create glass. Sculptor Inna Babaeva wins the Pittsburgh Glass Center 2022 Ron Desmett Memorial Award, which comes with $2,500 cash prize

The Pittsburgh Glass Center announced the winner of its 2022 Ron Desmett Memorial Award for Imagination with Glass, which honors artists using glass in experimental and innovative ways. New York-based Ukrainian multimedia sculptor Inna Babaeva’s willingness to take risks and think outside the box were cited in the announcement that she will be the recipient of a $2,500 cash prize as well as studio time at PGC.

IN MEMORIAM: Stanley Epstein (1936-2022)

Lawyer, husband, father, grandfather, and avid collector and patron of glass art, Stanley Epstein died on Wednesday June 1st, 2022 at the age of 86. A private family funeral was held on Saturday June 4th at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, New Jersey. Founder and former president of the Metropolitan Contemporary Glass Group (MCGG), Epstein left an indelible mark on the New York glass community, building a personal collection of glass art and supporting numerous glass artists along the way.

Tacoma readies itself to host the first in-person GAS conference since 2019

In just about one-month's time, the Glass Art Society is celebrating its 50th anniversary at its first in-person international conference in two years. For the first time since 2019, the international glass tribe will be convening in Tacoma, Washington, for an event themed “Between Here and There”. The concept is to honor the past half-century since the organization was founded (technically it kicked off 51-years ago with a 19-person gathering at Penland in 1971 [see the feature article "Power in Numbers" in the Spring 2022 edition of Glass #166]), but the pandemic has been pushing big anniversaries a year ahead (see Pilchuck's 50th anniversary, for example). The conference will not only be looking backwards, but in presentations and spirit, it also seeks to peer ahead into what the next 50 years might bring. Running from May 18 through the 22nd, the event packs lectures, demos, and various panel discussions in to three days of events divided between the main venues of the Museum of Glass, Tacoma Art Museum, Area 253 Glassblowing, and the Greater Tacoma Convention Center.
